    The end of the Year of the Frog…the beginning of the Decade of the Amphibian?

    Amphibian Ark declared 2008 as the Year of the Frog to help raise awareness and thereby facilitate fundraising for amphibian conservation programs. Given that it was the first global campaign of the ex situ community, its successes are impressive, if we do say so ourselves!

    Year of the Frog Coming to an End; Efforts to Save Them Can’t: The Research and Practice of Halting the Global Decline in Amphibians

    The keynote speaker at the recent ZSL Amphibian Symposium was Sir David Attenborough who eloquently stressed the biological and cultural importance of frogs, salamanders, and caecilians and presented clips from his recent amphibian-themed episodes of his wildly popular BBC program “Life in Cold Blood”.

    Amphibian conservation educator skills training, Central Zoo/National Trust for Nature Conservation, Kathmandu, Nepal

    Zoo Outreach Organisation (ZOO) educators visited Nepal on another mission but took time to conduct Amphibian Conservation Educator Skills Training at Central Zoo, Lalitpur on 9-10 September 2008. This training was coordinated by Central Zoo and the National Trust for Nature Conservation and sponsored by Sea World Busch Gardens Conservation Fund.

    ARAZPA frog conservation husbandry course

    In late August a three-day course on frog husbandry specifically aimed at zoo staff wishing to become involved in ex situ frog conservation programs was run at Taronga Zoo in Sydney. 


    Seventh Session of Amphibian Biology, Conservation, and Management course held at Toledo Zoo

    In November the Toledo Zoo hosted the seventh offering of AZA’s Board of Regents Amphibian Biology, Conservation, and Management course. This is the 2nd amphibian course conducted this year and is the first time the course was held since the opening in May of the zoo’s new amphibian facility, Amazing Amphibians


    Amphibian Conservation Training Course at Nordens Ark 2009

    A research school at Nordens Ark in Sweden is planned for 22-29 March, 2009 aimed at advanced training in topics of amphibian biology and conservation, breeding and rearing in captivity, and linking husbandry to practical conservation in the field.

    An update from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums

    AZA and its accredited zoos and aquariums continue their involvement in many amphibian projects. Four projects that AZA have been involved in are included in this recent report.


    CAZA Year of the Frog Steering Committee Report September 2008

    The CAZA Board reports that as they bring to a close the ‘Year of the Frog” they can now reflect on their accomplishments and the degree to which the goals that were set for the program were achieved.


    Chester Zoo team runs HellRunner!

    On Sunday 2nd November, a team from Chester Zoo ran in ‘HellRunner’ – a tough multi-terrain event in Delamere Forest – to raise funds for the Year of the Frog campaign.

    It has been another very busy period for the South Asian zoo and education organisations, with more amphibian and Year of the Frog materials produced and distributed throughout South Asia.


    Jumping In to Make a Difference!

    Second-grade students from Tremont Elementary School in Arlington Ohio have donated over $1,030 which they raised by holding a frog book read-a-thon and a raffle. This amazing community donation represents a significant effort towards helping to save amphibians.

    Postdoctoral Fellowship in Amphibian Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics

    The Wildlife Disease Laboratories at the Zoological Society of San Diego are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Amphibian Pathology and Molecular diagnostics in support of a project that will develop and refine tools necessary to control population-limiting infectious diseases.
